Australia need two wins to secure spot in World Cup finals

THE Socceroos must win their final two qualifiers if they are to secure a place in the World Cup finals in Brazil next year.

The thrilling 1-1 draw in Saitama on Tuesday night meant that Japan became the first team to make it to Rio.

But for Australia to finsih second and also secure qualification, it has to beat Jordan next week in Melbourne and defeat Iraq the week after in its final group game in Sydney.

Oman's 1-0 win over Iraq moved the Middle Eastern nation up to second in Asia Group B.

Australia, which now sits third, has a game in hand, however, and will go to Brazil with wins from both remaining qualifiers.

If they do not overtake Oman and finish third in the group then the Socceroos will have to qualify through a playoff.

In Tuesday's game Holger Osieck's men took a late lead through Tommy Oar but Keisuke Honda's stoppage time penalty gave the Blue Samurai the point it needed to make it to the finals.
