DANIEL McConnell is all about his mates.

So when a car smashed into this mates' mum's fish and chip shop in Brisbane's Hendra at 2am, he wasn't about to let them escape.

His wife rushed in to wake him, and dressed in only his "jocks", he first tried to stop a driver from leaving the scene then later chased him down in his car.

His interview on Nine's Today Show this morning should earn him an Order of Australia medal.

I was in bed sleeping at 2 o'clock this morning and me wife comes in and says "The shop has been -- someone ran into the shop".

I said, what? So I jumped out of bed and all I had was me undies on and I walked out the front and I seen the car smashed and I seen the bloke walking back to the car.

So I have walked outside and I have said, "What are you doing mate, you can't be leaving the scene".

He said, "Don't be a hero, mate", I am not trying to be a hero, mate, I am not trying to be a hero but the police are coming.

He decided he is going to scoot off the road and I say "Nah it's not going on like that mate".

I started chasing him down the road, he went down a side street, and the police were coming.

Mate, all I had was my jocks on and I was chasing him up the street and I was just like, mate...

A 35-year-old man has now been charged with driving unlicensed. He is also accused of crashing his car into the fish and chip shop then trying to leave the scene.
