'Aussie Beer' makers fined after brew made in China

A BRISBANE-based liquor company has been fined after selling a Chinese made beer branded "Aussie Beer".

From March to August last year Independent Liquor Group supplied a product named "Aussie Beer", which included the statement "100% owned" within a map of Australia and the words "Made from Australia's finest malt" in green and gold packaging

The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission found while Aussie Beer's packaging and labelling made it appear to be an Australian product, it was in fact made in China.

The ACCC chairman Rod Sims said the watchdog lodged an infringement notice stating it had "reasonable grounds" to believe ILG had made false or misleading claims about Aussie Beer's origins in contravention of the Australian Consumer Law.

"Country of origin representations, particularly those designed to grab the eye of the consumer by using well-known symbols, colours, or slogans, must be truthful," he said.

"Consumers will often place a premium on the provenance of a product, but are unable to check the accuracy of those claims. This is particularly the case with Australian-made products which encourage consumers to support local industries. Consumers are entitled to expect that prominent representations made on packaging are accurate without having to check for disclosures in the fine print."

ILG has paid a $10,200 penalty for falsely labelling the beer. The ACCC said the payment was not an admission of a contravention of the ACL.
