AUDI's A6 allroad quattro, offered for the first time in 2012 as a limited edition, has fashioned itself a spot in the luxury brand's permanent line-up.

Such was the demand for the posh wagon's capability both on and off the bitumen that the German manufacturer has made it a fixture on showroom floors.

This powerful 3.0-litre diesel unit (160kW and 500Nm) paired with a seven-speed S-tronic transmission offers a level of performance, comfort and specification associated with a premium offering. So much so that Audi has done away with the A6 Avant four-cylinder models (2.0 TFSI, 2.0 TDI) confident this quattro will fulfil buyer expectations.

An adaptive air suspension fit out lies at the heart of the A6 allroad's performance with automatic regulation of the vehicle's damping and height depending on the speed you travelling. Ground clearance can be manually adjusted via Audi's drive select program.

The A6 alllroad quattro (from $111,900) features exterior changes including a wider three-dimensional grille, freshly designed LED lights and dynamic indicators at the rear. The interior has been freshened up, too, with a new infotainment system with a high resolution driver information display to complement the chrome touches.

A stop-start system and free wheel mode which disengages the powertrain when you take your foot off the accelerator helps keep fuel economy to a very useful 5.6 litres/100km while the extra boost of torque can propel it from 0-100km in 7.3 seconds.

There have also been a few tweaks to the A4 allroad quattro, a new 2.0TDI engine the major change amongst them. The Euro 6 compliant unit with an upgraded turbo-booster offers more power (140kW and 400Nm), better efficiency and greater off-road credentials.

Available from $70,500 (plus on roads) the A4 allroad quattro also offers new equipment packages and an enhanced stability control system which switches automatically to off-road mode when poor surfaces are detected.
