Canvas bypassed for an 'art' of body experience

BARING all in the name of art is nothing new.

Nude models have been the artist's muse for centuries.

But Toowoomba body artist Kelli MacAlpine has turned her back on the traditional, instead preferring to paint her artworks directly on to the body itself, bypassing the canvas altogether.

"I love body painting because it's so interactive and so beautiful," Ms MacAlpine said.

"For me, I think the special part is seeing the artwork moving, walking or dancing, which gives it an extra dimension."

Ms MacAlpine said while it was a shame the art was washed off after a performance, the fact it was temporary mades it more exclusive.

"Viewers can enjoy being in the moment, getting a photo with the model and saying, 'I was there'," she said.

Ms MacAlpine is one of a growing number of artists around the world who have embraced the art of body painting. She is taking it to a new level, training and competing whenever she can.

And despite being a relative newcomer, Ms MacAlpine has already received several awards for her efforts, including the People's Choice Award two years running, and last year taking out first prize in airbrushing, all at the Australian Body Art Carnivale in Eumundi.

She's hoping to retain the title and perhaps pick up another when she returns to compete at the Carnivale next weekend on May 11 and 12.

Last month Ms MacAlpine returned from the Australian Face and Body Art Show in Melbourne with third place in the special effects category.

Her work has also been featured in magazines.

A full body design takes on average between six and eight hours to complete.
