ARNOLD Schwarzenegger is back in the film franchise that made him a superstar.

The 67-year-old has been in Sydney for the past few days promoting Terminator Genisys, the fifth film in the action franchise and Schwarzenegger's first Terminator film in 12 years.

He stars opposite Australians Jai Courtney and Jason Clarke in the reboot, which is the first of a trilogy planned by Paramount Pictures.

Schwarzenegger goes toe to toe with a younger version of himself in the upcoming film thanks to CGI special effects.

"When you play the Terminator of course it's terrific because you get away with it no matter what you do," he said.

"You can destroy everything and be the most evil and the most destructive, but it's a machine. So what? You can be the villain and the hero at the same time."

Terminator Genisys opens nationally on July 1.
