Arnie and Jai Courtney bring Terminator Genisys to Sydney

IT DOESN'T get any bigger than bringing a Terminator movie to your home town.

Sydney native Jai Courtney introduced the first footage from the reboot to a lucky group of cinema-goers in Sydney tonight alongside his legendary co-star Arnold Schwarzenegger.

"I'm really proud of the movie and it's great to see so many people here in the town where I grew up," Courtney told APN on the red carpet.

The fifth Terminator movie sees Courtney star in another big action franchise after his role as Eric in the Divergent series, as the bad guy swapping punches with Tom Cruise in Jack Reacher and as Bruce Willis's son in A Good Day to Die Hard.

He was full of praise for his 67-year-old Terminator Genisys co-star, who returns to the franchise for the first time in 12 years.

"Arnie's larger than life and he has a ball doing what he does," Courtney said.

"I don't think this would have been the same without having him involved."

In a Q&A before the advance screening, which featured 20 minutes of footage from the film, Schwarzenegger fondly remembered his early trips to Australia as a body builder and complimented Courtney on his physical preparations for the role.

He was also full of praise for Courtney and the other Australian actor in the film, Jason Clarke, for their work ethic.

Courtney must have also made quite an impression on the film's casting agents and producers.

While filming Angelina Jolie's Second World War drama Unbroken in Australia, he flew to Los Angeles and back in one weekend to audition for Terminator Genisys.

"I flew out on a Saturday morning, landed Saturday morning, flew back on the Saturday night and landed on the Monday morning; it was kind of weird," he said.

"It was worth it because I got the gig. That was the craziest (audition) to date."

Terminator Genisys sees Courtney's character Kyle Reese sent back in time to 1984 to rescue resistance leader John Connor's mother Sarah (Emilia Clarke, Game of Thrones), only to discover she's already preparing for Judgement Day with the help of a friendly T-800 (Schwarzenegger).

Terminator Genisys opens nationally on July 1.
