Archibald nominee Zavros in Rockhampton for artist talks

ONE would have expected an artist to be a bit flustered talking about being an Archibald Prize finalist.

But Brisbane-based Michael Zavros, who is giving talks at the Rockhampton Regional Art Gallery at the moment, was pretty calm yesterday talking about Thursday's announcement of this year's finalists.

Zavros is in town to promote his exhibition, The Prince, of paintings and drawings inspired by advertising and fashion that reflect the power of a great image.

He took time out to talk to The Bulletin about being a finalist in the conservative portraiture painting competition for the fifth time, with this being his fifth entry.

"I always hope… I think that because of what I enter I always think that I have longer odds but maybe slightly shorter odds this year," he said.

"I'm not sure why. I just think the work is a bit more successful than some of my earlier paintings."

Zavros admitted he's not really the type of artist who does a lot of portraiture.

"I've always felt I didn't want to step outside my practice and suddenly make portrait to enter this conservative portrait painting prize so I try to make something that still fits within my broader practice and if I can do something around the time of the Archibald Prize that is suitable then I'll have a crack at it."

See next week's editions for an in-depth feature about Zavros, whose love for painting or drawing animals dates back more than 30 years.
