Wigmore Arcade redevelopment to finish in time for Christmas

SOUTH Lismore construction company Greg Clark Building has been awarded the contract for the $1.6m redevelopment of Wigmore Arcade in Ballina.

Ballina Mayor David Wright said work on the arcade could start as soon as the paperwork was finalised.

"We want to have it finished and tenants operating before Christmas," he said.

The Wigmore Arcade works will include retiling the floor and removing entrance steps, installing new shopfronts and stained timber panelling, repainting the arcade and installing new lighting, refurbishing the toilets and putting in landscaping on Winton Lane and the Tamar Street carpark.

Cr Wright said two of the three tenders had been close.

"There were two tenders that were very close," he said.

"It (the upgrade) will be fantastic when it's finished - it will include landscaping, new toilets and work to fix the roof.

"The building is 60-odd years old, so it needs some work."

The council will also continue negotiations with business owners seeking rental relief as compensation for disturbance and a downturn in trade during the redevelopment.

Shop owners have been on month-to-month contracts since the long term leasing ended on December 31, 2012.

"One of our biggest priorities has been making sure the tenants are on-board, because there will be a bit of moving around," Cr Wright said.
