Fuel excise increases put aside

AS THE future of the Abbott government's budget remains under question, drivers across regional Australia will at least have some reprieve on their hip pockets.

The government, fighting to pass many key budget measures through a hostile Senate, has put aside its planned increases to fuel excise.

Bills to increase the excise, previously a hotly debated item within the Coalition, were taken off the agenda this week, leaving it until after a six-week recess from parliament.

It will mean the first rise planned and included in the May budget will not be delivered, with consumers to avoid an increase in line with inflation until November.
