Government to empower land owners to refuse CSG companies

AMIDST the chaos of budget day, Federal Parliament could begin debating a bill designed to empower land owners against gas companies operating on their land.

The bill would amend the Environment Protection and Biodiversity Act creating a "water trigger" for federal intervention on coal seam gas and large coal developments.

Under the amendment, the federal environment minister could not approve CSG or coal projects unless they were satisfied the landowner had given free and informed consent to allow the mining.
