Cory Bernardi calls for limits on Senate terms

A PROMINENT backbench Coalition senator has called for limits on Senate terms, decrying an increasing professional political class.

Conservative South Australian Senator Cory Bernardi made the call during a speech to the National Press Club in Canberra on Thursday.

Often outspoken, Senator Bernardi hit out at a rising class of professional politicians who were more concerned with their own futures than that of the nation.

Arguing against the rise of disillusionment some Australians feel towards politicians, he said the increasing support given to independents and minor parties was part of a wider global phenomenon.

Senator Bernardi, who has a chequered past in the Coalition, also called for more transparent government, arguing for an open database of government contracts to battle cynicism over how the government spends its money.
