It's easy being green
WE'VE all heard a joke about the number of Irishmen it takes to change a light globe.
Imagine those blokes trying to change the 1200 globes that have been replaced at Crowley Village.
The Ballina retirement village and nursing home signed up to the Enviro Saver Program being offered by Fieldforce Environmental.
Under the program, Fieldforce has changed 1200 light globes at the Ballina nursing home and retirement village for energy-effi- cient ones, as well as installed 80 water-saving showerheads.
And it has cost Crowley Village nothing.
Luke Garner, from Fieldforce, said the program is sponsored by the NSW Government, and the company receives its benefit through carbon trading.
He said the energy-efficient light globes use 80 per cent less power than regular globes, and that means a reduction in greenhouse gas emissions.
The free service is available to all households and businesses in the region.
Luke said a company representative will change all the globes in your home (except touch lamps and sensor lights) once for nothing. Phone 1300 780858 for more information, or see the website www.envirosaver.com.au.
Meanwhile, Ballina Shire Council last week received the Local Government and Shires Associations of NSW Mayor's Agreement on Climate Change.
The Agreement proposes that councils agree to 'meet or beat' greenhouse reduction targets of 30 per cent as assigned to Australia by the Kyoto Protocol.
The Agreement was passed unanimously at last year's Local Government Association conference and has now been sent to councils for endorsement.
