Nambucca to Warrell Ck $950m highway upgrade progresses

THE Acciona Ferrovial joint venture has been announced as the preferred tenderer for the design and construction of the Pacific Hwy upgrade between Warrell Creek and Nambucca Heads.

Deputy Prime Minister Warren Truss said works for the $950 million Warrell Creek to Nambucca Heads project will include a new bridge over the Nambucca River at Macksville, twin bridges to cross Warrell Creek and two grade-separated interchanges.

"The current distance of the Pacific Hwy along this section is 23.6km and this project will reduce the distance to 19.5km," Mr Truss said.

Federal Member for Cowper Luke Hartsuyker said more than 15,000 motorists drive on the Warrell Creek to Nambucca Heads section of the highway every day.

"The first sod has been turned on the Urunga to Nambucca Heads section, work has been ramped up on the Frederickton to Eungai project and now we have a preferred tenderer announced for the very important section between Warrell Creek and Nambucca Heads," Mr Hartsuyker said.

The upgrade project is expected to start in the middle of the year, with completion scheduled for late 2016.

In the meantime a new community display centre has opened so residents can learn more about the 22km upgrade from Nambucca Heads to Urunga.

The centre is open weekdays from 9am-5pm and can be accessed off the existing Pacific Hwy at the Ballards Rd intersection, following the signs to the main site compound.

Roads and Maritime Services engaged Lend Lease to design and build the Nambucca Heads to Urunga section of the highway upgrade, which will link with the existing four-lane highway north of the Waterfall Way interchange at Raleigh.
