Alstonville teams rule pool in FNC water polo

THREE Alstonville players were standouts as the club enjoyed a clean sweep in the Far North Coast Water Polo at the Alstonville Pool on Monday night.

Alyce Tozer, Nicholas Stanek and Doug Thompson all played key roles for their respective teams as Alstonville teams dominated.

Alstonville W2 cemented their place atop the women's competition ladder with a 17-2 thrashing of Sweat Excess in the opening game.

Although unable to keep pace with the Alstonville side, Excess played well in patches and battled through to the end.

Brooke Covery scored both goals for Excess but they came too late to make a difference.

Alstonville W1 continued the dominance in the second women's game, running out 10-3 winners against a Byron Bay team forced to play one player down.

Byron threatened a comeback with two quick goals early in the last quarter but it was too little too late.

Tozer starred for Alstonville, netting four goals.

In the men's competition, ladder leaders Alstonville A1 downed cellar-dwellers Lismore Workers 13-4.

Alstonville dominated the opening exchanges to lead 7-2 at the half-time break but Lismore goalkeeper Jon Horsley ensured the score didn't blow out in the second half with some great saves, including stopping a five-metre penalty.

Alstonville A2 was forced to work hard for a 9-5 win over SCU.

The first quarter made the difference with Alstonville started quickly, racing to a 3-0 lead by the end of the first quarter.

The sides then traded goals but SCU were unable to bridge the gap.

In the final game of the night, Alstonville B faced Ballina Bin Chooks.

Bin Chooks didn't have the necessary numbers so played under forfeit, ensuring Alstonville teams won all matches.

Next week promises a great match as Alstonville A1 and Alstonville A2 do battle in a top-of-the-table men's clash at Alstonville Pool from 7.30 pm.
