Alstonville teams rule pool


ALSTONVILLE walked away winners after the A-grade men and women's Far North Coast Water Polo grand finals at the Southern Cross University Pool on Saturday.

Isaac Hair scored four goals to help Alstonville (1) to a comprehensive 13-4 win against club-mates Alstonville (2) in the men's decider.

Alstonville (1) were always going to be hard to chase down after jumping out to an 11-0 lead in the second quarter.

Goalkeeper Ronan Cowie was among the many to impress while Nick Stanek played well in a losing team.

Alyce Tozer and Kate Bracey were the stand-outs in the women's final when Alstonville beat Byron Bay 12-7.

Tozer scored five goals while Bracey got four as Alstonville finished the season with a flurry.

Jasmine Collins scored five goals for Byron Bay with Dellis Smyth and Kelly Hamilton others to impress.

Alstonville finished the competition rounds in fourth place on the ladder but lifted in the finals, downing minor premiers Southern Cross University in the semi-final to seal a place in the final.

SCU Water Rats captain Tristan Zobel scored four goals in the men's B-grade final to steer the competition newcomers to a 7-2 win over Alstonville.

It was the Water Rats first season in the competition and they finished minor and major premiers.

While Zobel starred for Water Rats, Hamish O'Donnell and goalkeeper James Nunn were among the stand-outs for Alstonville.

SCU earned their place in the season decider with a hard-fought 5-4 win against Mullumbimby in the semi-final.

Alstonville also scraped into the grand final, edging out Lennox-Ballina 3-2 in their semi-final.

SCU player Josh McHugh was named player of the day by FNC Water Polo.

  • A Grade: Alstonville (1) d Alstonville (2) 13-4;
  • B Grade: SCU Water Rats d Alstonville 7-2.


  • A Grade: Alstonville d Byron Bay 12-7.
