Alleged thieves go from sugar high to police custody

TWO people allegedly attempting to satisfy their sweet tooth at a pony club canteen in South Grafton have been arrested after biting off more than they could chew.

Police will allege that some time between 10.40pm and 11.15pm on Sunday, a 22-year-old Grafton man and a 24-year-old Yamba woman broke into the canteen at the Hawthorne Rodeo Park and stole a number of cans of soft drink, chocolate and ice creams.

Grafton duty officer Jo Reid said when officers arrived, the pair were located close to the scene.

A number of footprints on the canteen door indicated it was kicked open, she said.

It is believed some of the proceeds of the theft were also recovered, although it is unknown whether any of the ice cream had melted.

The 22-year-old has been charged with two counts of aggravated break and enter and refused bail to Grafton on October 4.

The female, on the other hand, has been bailed over charges of aggravated break and enter, steal in company and goods in custody. She is expected to appear in Grafton Local Court on September 19.
