Aerial surveyor wins top award

AFTER seeing the name of his company, many people ask Matt McCauley if he can spell.

While he admits he isn't the best speller, the Rockhampton businessman explains the name Atlass is an acronym for aerial topographic laser survey systems.

"My wife said it was too long, so we changed it," he said.

Mr McCauley agreed it was a good move for the aerial surveying company, which services many Central Queensland mines and other major contractors across the region.

Last month the business of only 20 employees was the finalist in two award categories and took out the top gong for fastest-growing company under 50 employees at the 2012 ActionCoach Asia Pacific Business Excellence Awards.

About 120 business owners from Australia, New Zealand, Indonesia and Malaysia gathered in the Gold Coast for the ceremony.

"I'm very proud, particularly of the contributions of my staff," Mr McCauley said.

"We wouldn't be able to get to where we are without them."

Central Queensland ActionCoach's Don Butler said Atlass was constantly leading the industry with its innovative designs.

"It was great to see Matt and the team at Atlass recognised," Mr McCauley said.

"It was an even greater achievement given the demographics and standard of the com

petitors."
