Adelaide players must cop blame, says McGowan

ADELAIDE United defender Dylan McGowan says the players must step up if the club is to escape from the bottom of the A-League.

The defending champion Reds have six points from 12 games and have won only once in defence of their title.

Pressure is mounting on coach Guillermo Amor after a 4-0 defeat to ladder-leading Sydney FC at Coopers Stadium on Boxing Day but McGowan said it was time for the players to shoulder some of the burden for the poor run of results.

"I think we can improve on defence, midfield and attack,” McGowan said.

"I think all of those aspects really need to go up a notch if we are going to start turning things around.

"We think we are a better team but the table doesn't lie.

"We are there for a reason and I think with our performances recently we have shown why we are at the bottom.

"But within the squad we know we are a good team but we are just not showing it at the moment.”

McGowan said he and the players would back their coach to the hilt and hoped the club would not replace the Spaniard.

"Those are decisions which are out of my hands. We as players obviously hope he is not (sacked) because he is in the hot seat, so should we be,” the 25-year-old said.

"We are right behind him and he is right behind us and hopefully as a group we can pull each other out of this.

"The only way we are going to do this is by hitting the training track as hard as we possibly can and get everyone lifting their preparation and obviously their performances and try to get some wins.

"As players we are struggling to find out what's going on.

"He will obviously work on a way to beat Wellington (on Sunday) and we will work on sticking to that game plan and hopefully we can come away with the three points.”
