Accused drug dealer denied bail

AN ACCUSED Sunshine Coast drug dealer who police allegedly caught with pure methylamphetamine and an arsenal of weapons will spend his second Christmas behind bars.

Craig Kenneth Barker has been in prison for about 18 months on charges including trafficking drugs and possessing illegal weapons.

On Friday he applied for bail in Brisbane Supreme Court.

Mr Barker has been accused of running a drug operation on the Sunshine Coast from April 2014 to July 2015. The court heard police raided his house in April, June and November of 2014 and in July 2015. Police claim on each occasion they found drugs in the house, including a total of about 15g of pure methylamphetamines.

The alleged offences occurred when Mr Barker was already on bail.

The court heard Mr Barker was allegedly found with a "significant” cache of weapons including guns, knives, nunchucks, Tasers and brass knuckles.

Mr Barker had applied for bail in the Supreme Court last year and had to prove to the court his circumstances had changed.

His barrister Kevin Kelso said Mr Barker was now at risk of spending more time in jail waiting to go to court than he would if he was convicted of the crimes.

But Justice David Boddice said, if convicted, Mr Barker would serve a lengthy period behind bars.

"The applicant is facing a very lengthy period of actual imprisonment,” he said.

"Even allowing for a plea of guilty and a parole eligibility date at the one-third mark there is no prospect that he has served too much time at this stage.”

But Justice Boddice said even if Mr Barker had established a change in circumstance since the last bail application he would not have been granted bail.

He said the amount of drugs Mr Barker was found with "did not suggest he was a bit player”.

He said Mr Barker had re-offended on previous bail orders and had been "spectacularly unsuccessful” when he attended a drug rehabilitation centre.

Bail was refused.
