Freight train crushes 4WD

IN case you've ever wondered, this is what happens when a 4WD takes on a freight train.

The devastating consequences of the lop-sided encounter were evident at Coramba yesterday afternoon.

What had been a Toyota Hi-Lux was left an unrecognizable mangle of metal.

Police, the Rural Fire Service, the SES and the NSW Ambulance scrambled to the scene mid-afternoon after reports that a vehicle had been flattened by a north-bound freight train.

To the relief of everyone, there was no-one in the vehicle at the moment of impact.

The two young men who had been in the 4WD only moments before the collision were not injured although they were facing a barrage of questions about what they were doing driving on the tracks.

They had allegedly accessed the North Coast rail line via a private rail crossing just to the north of Coramba.

No-one on the train was injured although late yesterday long delays were expected to freight and passenger services.
