ABC's Fresh Blood graduates are a Skit Box full of laughs

VIEWERS voted with their eyes and now the graduates of the ABC's Fresh Blood are making their debuts.

The comedy pilot initiative was created in 2013 to kick-start the careers of young comedy writers, performers and directors.

From the initial 494 submissions received, 24 teams were selected to make a series of shorts for the ABC's online viewing platform iView and only two pilots progressed to a full-series commission.

All-female comedy trio Skit Box is one of those two deserving finalists. Greta Lee Jackson, Sarah Bishop and Adele Vuko are best known for their viral Activewear video.

Their six-part sketch comedy series Wham Bam Thank You Ma'am is a fun and twisted cavalcade of sketches, music videos and narrative comedy.

The comedy has already been picked up by US streaming website SeeSo and features writing and guest appearances by David Collins of the Umbilical Brothers, Triple J's Matt Okine and Christiaan Van Vuuren, one half of the Bondi Hipsters.

"Because we've been making stuff together for four years now, we already had an established voice and tone, and I think that really helped us," Bishop tells APN's The Guide.

"When we were collaborating with other people in the writing room they came in knowing what our style of comedy was."

One of Bishop's more memorable characters is an overzealous health blogger named Katrina Hogger.

"She is a total psychopath," she laughs. "Part of the fun of that sketch is she has this intern who has just got out of jail and is doing it as part of her community service. I like to think Katrina's scarier than anybody she (the intern) was in jail with."

Bishop, who has studied improv at The Upright Citizens Brigade in Los Angeles, says the trio's stand-up shows helped them develop characters for the series.

"Our live stage show is a great way to see which things get a reaction from the audience and which don't," she says.

Today the ABC and Screen Australia also announced a second round of Fresh Blood applicants, four of which will be chosen in 2018 to produce comedy pilots.

Wham Bam Thank You Ma'am debuts tonight at 9.30pm on ABC2.
