Abbott says "common humanity" drove MH370 search

COMMON humanity was at the centre of the multi-national effort to find the wreckage of Malaysian flight MH370, Prime Minister Tony Abbott said on Thursday.

Mr Abbott made the comments after a meeting with Malaysian Prime Minister Najib Razak in Perth, the current base of seven countries' efforts to find the missing aircraft.

He said the joint effort was a "remarkable international co-operation" displaying a common humanity among the military staff involved in the search operation.

Noting is was a "gargantuan task", Prime Minister Najib said Australia showed it was a "very reliable and true friend" to the South-East Asian nation.

"Indeed this is probably the largest mission put together by so many countries to locate an aircraft and your commitment is very, very much appreciated by Malaysia and by the world," he said.

"We owe it to the grieving families to give them comfort and closure to this rather tragic event and the world expects us to do our level best and I'm very confident that you will indeed show what we can do together as a group of nations that we want to find answers.

"We want to provide comfort to the families and we will not rest until answers are indeed found."
