A SUNSHINE Coast general practitioner has shared her concerns about the growing number of allergy cases presenting on the Sunshine Coast.
Ocean Family Medicine's Dr Alison Cunningham said 50% of her practice was now allergy related.
The reason for this increase is because across the country the rate of food allergies in children has increased 500% in the last 10 years.
She said research had found that allergies typically start in childhood, with almost 10% of one-year-olds (9.8%) having a "significant food allergy".
While some children, with allergies to milk and egg, will grow out of their allergies by the age of five, only 20% of children with a nut allergy will grow out of theirs.
However, if you develop an allergy in adulthood, you're likely to keep that allergy for life, Dr Cunningham said.
The Sippy Downs doctor's interest in allergens came about because two of her children have "severe food allergies".
