Volcanic eruption forces flights through Asia to re-route
QANTAS has re-routed flights to Tokyo and from Shanghai to avoid the cloud of ash being spewed out of erupting Mount Tavurvur on Papua New Guinea's East Britain island.
Tavurcur burst into action early yesterday (Fri) morning with PNG news sites reporting that authorities had evacuated communities close to the mountain.
The eruption has caused a giant ash cloud which the Volcanic Ash Advisory Centre in Darwin saying it was around 50,000ft - the same height at which aeroplanes fly.
They don't expect the cloud to reach Australia but more planes may have to take alternative routes, if as predicted, the cloud moves across to the Solomon Islands and Vanuatu.
Hundreds of Australian aircraft were grounded in 2011 following the eruption of a volcano in Chile.
