UN calls on Myanmar to address severe poverty problem

THE head of the United Nation's Development Program, Helen Clark, has called on Myanmar to address poverty.

Ms Clark, the former New Zealand Prime Minister, made the call while in Myanmar for a high-level political conference.

She told the Australia Network that while progress was inevitable; feeding the poor cannot be ignored.

"Certainly Myanmar needs growth, but it needs the kind of growth that will lift people out of abject poverty," she said.

The UNDP was the only UN agency operating in Myanmar when Cyclone Nargis hit in 2008, the cyclone caused more than 130,000 deaths and untold destruction.
