THERE are more pensioners living in Toowoomba than any other place in Australia, according to latest figures from the Australian Taxation Office.

In a single year, nearly $40 million in pension payments were made for the 4350 postcode.

The city also ranked second behind Bundaberg in the nation for welfare payments with nearly $23 million in allowances paid.

Tax figures reveal there are at least 4000 people receiving pensions in the post code area.

Toowoomba pensioner Fay Perkins said she had been receiving the payment since she turned 65.

"You've got to be careful," Mrs Perkins, 80, said.

"You can't go out and buy big flash cars and that."

She volunteers at the Newtown Rose Garden as well as the Toowoomba Senior Citizens Club.

"We are all getting older," Mr Hoppe said.

His club, which has nearly 500 members, holds events every weekday.
