Sydney FC coach on team's loss to Newcastle United

FOOTBALL: New Sydney FC coach Graham Arnold took a glass half-full approach to his team's 4-0 loss to English Premier League club Newcastle United in Dunedin.

Three defensive errors gifted goals to Siem De Jong, Emmanuel Riviere and Mapou Yanga-Mbiwa, before a late strike by Adam Armstrong completed the rout.

"It was a great work out for us," Arnold said. "To come up against a Premier League team who are just three weeks away from the start of their season, and we are still 12 weeks away, meant it was always going to be tough."

Sydney takes on West Ham in Wellington on Saturday.
