Royalty arrives to celebrate Opera House's 40th birthday

CROWN Prince Frederik of Denmark and his Australian wife Princess Mary helped celebrate the Sydney Opera House's 40th birthday at a star-studded affair last night. (Oct 27)

Thousands of people packed into the forecourt for the twilight anniversary concert to mark the milestone.

The exceptional line-up of artists included Deborah Mailman, Baz Luhrmann, Sarah Blasko, John Butler, Megan Washington, Paul Grabowsky and members of the Wharf Revue.

The concert closed with the Sydney Symphony Orchestra performing the work that opened the Opera House in October 1973, Beethoven's 9th Symphony, and featured performances by the Sydney Philharmonia Choirs and soloists from Opera Australia.
