Rebel bikie gang had refused Sydney Siege gunman membership

MAN Haron Monis was rejected not just by the Australian Islamic community and his family - he was also refused membership to a bikie gang, a coronial inquest has heard.

The gunman actively tried to gain membership to two Sydney chapters of the Rebels outlaw motorcycle gang in 2013, but was deemed "weird" by members.

His efforts were real - he bought a motorbike and changed his dress to fit in with the bikies.

He was ultimately told to stay away and gang members sent him packing after confiscating his motorbike.

Although being a bikie may seem incongruous with his false claims of being a Muslim sheikh, counsel assisting the inquiry Sophie Callan said it matched his constant, but repeatedly failed, goal of "achieving significance".
