HE WASN'T the royal people were expecting to get off the plane, but Prince William was a hit in Malta.

The Duke of Cambridge was a last minute stand-in for his pregnant wife, who pulled out of what would have been her first solo trip, but was suffering severe morning sickness.

Price William greeted a crowd of thousands, apologising for coming in his wife's place.

The official visit to Malta was celebrating the 50th anniversary of the island nation's independence.
