One in 10 Australians will have their identity misused

ALMOST one in every 10 Australians experienced some type of misuse of their personal information in the past 12 months.

A survey of 5000 Australians by the Australian Institute of Criminology also found up to one in five experiences such crime "at some point in their lives".

The report on identity crime suggested up to 1 million Australians each year fall victim to cyber crime or identity misuse and that it was one of the most common forms of crime in the country.

It also found identity crime victims also experienced other impacts of the crime, including 14% being refused credit and 10% undergoing mental or emotional stress as a result.
