Licensed hunter shot during hunting trip

A MAN was shot in a pig hunting accident on Saturday north of Young in NSW.

According to police two men - a 49-year-old and a 50-year-old - and a 49-year-old woman, all licensed hunters, were pig hunting on a private property at Berremangra.

At around 8.15pm, after they'd finished their hunt, they were packing their four wheel drive the 50-year-old man sat in the front passenger seat of the vehicle.

The woman had a .308 hunting rifle and stumbled as she placed the firearm in the rear passenger side foot-well and the gun fired.

The 50-year-old man was struck in the lower back with the bullet passing through the seat.

Paramedics were called and the group drove towards emergency services from their remote location.

The injured man had to be airlifted to Canberra Hospital for surgery. He was in a critical but stable condition on Sunday.

Cootamundra Local Area Command police attended and seized the vehicle which has been towed to Young Police Station for forensic examination.

The rifle and three others have also been seized as part of the investigation while the 49-year-old man and woman have been interviewed at Yass Police Station.
