CHANGES made to media rules have led to less local television on prominent channels, eroding audiences for Australian TV shows, screen producers have claimed.
Data released by the Australian Communications and Media Authority this week showed the amount of Australian TV shown on city-based commercial free-to-air channels fell.
The changes, Screen Producers Australia claimed, came about due to Gillard Government media reforms last year, allowing channels to move Aussie shows on to newer channels with fewer viewers.
One such instance, they claimed, was the move by Seven to shift its children's programming to 7Two and 7Mate, along with documentaries and a mini-series.
SPA executive director Matthew Deane also said the Nine Network had used New Zealand shows to fulfil some 51% of its Australian-produced television quota.
