Firies' quick action saves Cooroy complex

THE quick actions of seven firefighting crews has stopped a Cooroy street from going up in smoke.

Wearing breathing apparatus, firefighters made their way to the back of Cooroy Butchery on Maple Lane to tackle a fierce blaze which ignited at 6.30am.

The building was well alight when crews arrived and their strategic efforts to contain the fire to the rear of the building meant other businesses were saved.

Commander John Von Nida said firefighters attacked the flames from in front and the rear to contain the damage to the rear of the building.

Crews peeled away the iron roof to ensure the flames were not spreading through the top.

Mr Von Nida praised the efforts of his team for avoiding a complete disaster in the shopping complex.

"It was a tough fire to tackle which had the potential to be a lot worse," Mr Von Nida said.

"It was an older-style building with connections to all the other shops so the fire was just starting to creep into the shop next door when we hit it just in time, so the crews did a good job of keeping the fire at its origin," he said.

"The whole street could have gone up if the boys didn't get there when they did.

"It was touch and go for a while there."

Nearby shop owner Ross Birkett from Maple Lane Secondhand and Antiques said he was grateful the fire didn't spread to neighbouring buildings.

"It's very sad for the shop owners and my heart goes out to them, it's just horrible," Mr Birkett said.

"But I am so grateful the firefighters reacted so quickly because this could have been a lot worse."

Queensland Fire and Emergency Services and Queensland Police Service are investigating the cause of the blaze.
