Facts show crime is decreasing, except for one problem area

DESPITE consistent falls in most crimes around Australia, arrests for amphetamine-related crimes jumped 30% from 2011 to 2012, data shows.

The Australian Institute of Criminology's annual crime report finds some ups and downs, but largely falling crime rates for individual crimes.

It shows the number of homicides, assaults, robberies, and abductions have consistently fallen for the past decade.

Sexual assaults also remained between 19,000 and 17,000 a year, although there was a 500-odd rise in such assaults, up to 18,153 from 17,592 between 2011 and 2012.

The report, which compiles state, ABC and AIC data on criminal activity, also found a quarter of all homicides in 2012 were committed with use of a firearm.
