Facebook key to political participation for youngsters

TEENS and Facebook add up to politics.

That's what University of Sydney researchers found when they surveyed 3600 young people aged 16 to 29 years old.

Facebook was the most effective tool to increase political participation, US government and international relations Associate Professor Ariadne Vromen said.

The Civic Network two-year project looked at Facebook users across Australia, the UK and the US.

Around 65% of young Aussie survey participants said the internet giant was where they first heard about news and major events.

"We have found overall that increasing use of social media leads to more political participation by young people - especially for those young people that have an issue-based approach to why political participation matters, rather than a traditional orientation that only focuses on formal, electoral politics," Prof Vromen said.
