Doctors want better mental health care for those with CHD

SCIENTISTS are calling for better mental health care for congenital heart disease patients to help them cope with the emotional toll of diagnosis and treatment.

More than 2400 Australian babies are born with CHD each year.

A study published today in the Medical Journal of Australia calls for national standards to be developed for mental health care in CHD, saying equal emphasis on physical and psychological treatment is critical.

The authors said more research was needed to understand the difficulties experienced, including the risk of postnatal depression in parents of CHD babies.
