6.3 earthquake strikes north of NZ

A magnitude 6.3 earthquake has struck off the Kermadec Islands, north of New Zealand, this morning.

The Islands sit about halfway between the northern tip of the North Island and Tonga

The quake struck at 4.50am AEST, at a depth of 20km, 193km southeast of Raoul Island and 1017km northeast of Whakatane, according to the United State Geological Survey.

The Pacific Tsunami Warning Centre says a Pacific-wide destructive tsunami is not expected.
