AUSTRALIA'S consumer watchdog responded to more than 550 complaints and inquiries per day in the first three months of the year, figures released on Thursday show.
In its March quarter report, the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission revealed it dealt with almost 50,000 disgruntled businesses and consumers to start the year.
Among its other achievements for the quarter the ACCC secured more than $800,000 in penalties for breaches of the Competition and Consumer Act, and negotiated the recalls of more than 260,000 unsafe and faulty consumer goods.
The Federal Court ordered Adepto Publications Pty Ltd, its sole owner, director and a former manager to pay penalties totalling $750,000 after they admitted they had made false and misleading representations for advertising services that were never requested.
Also of note, King Island Meatworks and Cellars Pty Ltd were ordered to pay $50,000 for misleading place-of-origin representations.
These judgements took to $22.58 million the total penalties awarded by the Federal Courts under the Australian Consumer Law pecuniary penalty regime.
The ACCC also granted conditional authorisation for the tie-up of airlines Qantas and Emirates.
