TWEED City Shopping Centre has lodged a DA for a $20.5 million expansion, including an outdoor dining area and a children's playground - four months after we broke the story.

THE owners of the area's biggest shopping centre, DEXUS Property Group, says the redevelopment, which The Daily News reported in July, will provide "a more vibrant commercial and social quality".

The centre's floor space will increase by 4000sq m with key components a 400sq m mini-major retail outlet and an entertainment and leisure precinct.

The precinct, located on the western side of the shopping centre with access from Minjungbal Dr, will include a range of food and beverage outlets offering alfresco dining thanks to an awning on the northern and southern perimeters.

There will also be public spaces featuring native and subtropical plants and sculptural benches.

A playground on the western side of the site will include climbing frames.

A canopy in combination with the adjacent native trees will provide shade for children and parents in the playground. Informal seating will be provided within the playground.

The development will also include the removal of the existing elevated car park, internal demolition and reconfigurations, an additional 160 car parks and revised loading docks.

DEXUS says it has delivered on market research, which indicated that the local community wanted community space, a connection to nature and identity steeped in the local character.

"Our aim is to invent an architectural language that references the curvaceous coastal and river landscape forms in the Tweed precinct," the application states.

A Tweed City spokeswoman said it was too soon to predict a start date for construction.

Tweed Chamber of Commerce vice president and Cr Warren Polglase said it was great to see such a major business showing great faith in the region.
