2014 Skoda Superb range receives cut and polish

REVISED interiors, improved fuel consumption and massive price cuts headline the arrival of Skoda's updated Superb range.

It now exclusively a four-cylinder front-drive affair, with all-wheel drive and V6 variants axed from the range which starts from less than $32,000.

The brand's flagship large sedan and wagon has a completely new front end which has been redesigned up to the A-pillars.

The radiator grille, Skoda logo, front headlights and fog lights, bumper, front fender and bonnet are new.

Top-shelf models have bi-xenon headlights with integrated LED daytime running lights and LED indicators.

On the exterior, "metal grey" and "moon white" have been added to the metallic colour choices. Standard alloy wheels include 17-inch "Twister" on Ambition and 18-inch "Trinity" on Elegance variants.

At the rear are two new triangles design elements below the boot lid - in the sheet metal itself in the wagon and in the shape of the rear taillights in the sedan.

The boot can still be opened in two stages - just the lid or the entire rear boot including the back window.

There are two engine choices, one petrol and a diesel.

The petrol features the 118kW TSI engine, which produces 250Nm and achieves average fuel consumption of 7.2 litres per 100km.

Fuel usage averages 5.5L/100km with the 125kW 2.0-litre diesel which generates 350Nm.

Both engines are paired with a DSG transmission as standard - a seven speed DSG features with the 118TSI engine, and a six-speed for the 125TDI.

Dual-zone air conditioning, leather trim, electronic control functionality for both front seats, along with a Bolero radio with 16.5cm display, MP3 player including Bluetooth audio and streaming, USB, AUX, CD player, SD card slot and eight speakers is standard.

The Elegance models are upgraded to a Columbus satellite navigation unit, with 30GB hard drive and 10-speakers.

Bottom line

Skoda Superb

Ambition 118TSI $31,990

Elegance 118TSI $39,990

Elegance 125 TDI $44,990

Wagon premium $1700
