Man pretends to be Bechtel worker, signs in at luxury hotel

A MAN caught trying to ride the coat tails of local industry was sentenced in Gladstone Magistrates Court earlier this week.

Leigh Kevin Mark Matthews pleaded guilty on Tuesday to one count of fraud, after being caught treating himself to a luxurious night at the Rydges Hotel on Goondoon St, pretending to be associated with Bechtel GLNG.

The court heard Matthews had made a one-night booking, for February 20, signing off for the accommodation as an employee of Bechtel.

Matthews then helped himself to the mini-bar, damaged property in the apartment and smoked in the room, destructive behaviour which totalled $997.95 in room damages.

After his credit card had declined, Matthews and his friends made their escape via the basement, before police apprehended Matthews at his home address, where he admitted he had no money and no association whatsoever with Bechtel GLNG.

Since the incident, Matthews had repaid the $997.95 to Rydges, which may have helped him avoid having a conviction recorded, but he was handed down a $1000 fine by Magistrate Russell Warfield.
