It’s all over for Ballina’s Prawn

The Caltex service station stopped trading on Monday of this week, leaving the whole complex just a shell of its former self.

LAST SHIFT: Treaci Ashcroft worked the last shift at the Caltex service station at the Big Prawn on Monday of this week.

IT’S over for the Big Prawn.

The Caltex service station stopped trading on Monday of this week, leaving the whole complex just a shell of its former self.

Petrol was served after the scheduled 6am shut-off to empty the tanks at the servo, with Treaci Ashcroft working the final shift.

There now is nothing in the way for owner of the site, Santo Pennisi, to demolish the Prawn.

He is keeping his plans for demolition close to his chest, and has yet to reveal what he wants to do with the West Ballina site once the Prawn has gone.

Ballina Shire Council gave approval for the demolition of the Prawn in August last year, and businesses in the complex have been closing since.

The servo was the last to shut, and fencing now surrounds the icon.
