POLICE are seeking mobile phone video images of an alleged schoolyard brawl involving a NSW north coast teenager who died in hospital the next day.

Jai Morcom, 15, died at Gold Coast Hospital on Saturday after he allegedly suffered head injuries during a fight at Mullumbimby High School in northern NSW on Friday.

Tweed-Byron local area police commander Acting Superintendent Owen King said officers had heard claims there was mobile phone footage of the incident.

But so far investigators knew only of video footage showing the incident's aftermath.

"Can I stress how important it is that investigators have access to all relevant eyewitness accounts and available footage," Supt King said in a statement on Wednesday.

He said video recordings would help police come to an informed view of the circumstances of the teenager's death.

A post-mortem examination was conducted in Brisbane on Tuesday, but more tests would be needed before a preliminary report could be released, Supt King said.

"I understand many friends, relatives and concerned members of the community are desperately trying to make sense of this tragic occurrence," he said.

"But I urge everyone to be patient and not speculate about the cause of Jai's death."
