BIG TIDE: The Tamar Street bus interchange looked a bit like a dock as Monday's king tide caused salt water to rise up from sto
SALT water building up at the Tamar Street bus interchange gave a good indication of Monday's king tide, with water seeping through stormwater drains and over the street at the bus terminal.
The 10am tide was the highest in the past 18 years and, at two metres, it broke over the banks in parts of Shaws Bay.
And there is a bigger one coming up on June 23 and 24, which is expected to peak at 2.08m at 8.55pm on June 23 and at the same height at 9.45pm on June 24.
Monday's king tide forced lifeguards to close Lighthouse Beach at Ballina as there was very little beach above the waterline. In the Richmond River, there was virtually nothing left of the popular bathing and fishing spot at The Spit.
If you have a good photo of the big tide, the Department of Environment and Climate Change (DECC) will be interested to see it.
The DECC asked members of the community along the NSW coast to assist in a volunteer photographic survey of the impact of the king tide.
"The king tide will provide an opportunity to see areas along the coast that are subject to flooding and at risk from erosion and storm damage," the department said.
"It is also an opportunity to raise awareness of the long-term challenges of sea level rise. "In recent workshops around the State, the department has presented forecasts of climate change impacts, including the potential for sea levels to rise by 40cm by 2050 and by 90cm by 2100."
