SWINGERS: The Big Con Band plays a variety of music, from Latin, funk and jazz to swing.

A BENEFIT concert by the Big Con Band for Alstonville High School student Lachlan McLennan, who will perform with the Beijing Olympic Orchestra during the Games, will be held on Sunday, July 20, at the Ballina RSL Club.

Doors open at 1.30pm with the show to commence at 2pm. Tickets are $10 per person and are available at Alstonville Bookworm in The Plaza, Ballina RSL Club, River St, Ballina, Lismore Conservatorium of Music, Keen Street, Lismore, and are also available at the door.

The Big Con Band rehearses every week at The Conservatorium of Music in Keen Street, Lismore. Their leader is local saxophone legend Ken Stubbs, who also happens to be Lachlan's saxophone teacher.

The band is made up of local musicians, including some who are still at university, and a couple of high school students, one of whom is Lachlan.

Recent performances by the Big Con Band include being the band for the LADS Charity at The Blue Birdie and New Year's Eve Celebrations at Byron Bay.

They also had great success with their Swing into Xmas evening at Bangalow's A&I hall last December.

With a contemporary and fresh approach to big band music, the Big Con Band entertains its audiences with Latin, funk, jazz, rhythm and blues as well as swing.

Lachlan has been playing the saxophone for five years and currently plays alto saxophone in the Alstonville High School Stage Band, the Alstonville Concert Band and the Millennium Marching Band in Sydney - the band that he is travelling to China with as part of the Beijing Olympic Orchestra).

He plays tenor saxophone with the Big Con Band and has attended regional and State music camps.
