A DISH created plenty of excitement at Southern Cross School K-12 last week ? it was 'sick', said student Lachlan Copeland.

The dish focused the sun's rays, burning a hole through the blade of a hand saw.

Geoff Moxham, of the Climate Change Action Network, said the dish was the casing of a former WWII anti-aircraft gun's spotlight, later used by a Queensland university to measure the sun's energy. The dish can generate 1500 degrees Celsius of heat.

The dish was part of the Youth Environmental Expo, focusing on sustainable technologies, held at the school and visited by other schools.
