Wall is a tribute to Lions

THE Lions Club of Ballina has done a lot for the community over the years, and the club now has a new Memorial Wall to honour past members.

Present members and families of past members gathered at Commemoration Park in Ballina last Saturday to see Ballina Anglican Church Reverend Robert Ireland dedicate the new wall, which replaces a series of plaques which had become eroded.

Ballina Lions Club president John Grant said the club had been active in Ballina since 1952, and it was fitting that the new wall was dedicated in the club's 60th year.

"We thought it the appropriate time to do something," he said.

Mr Grant said that all money raised in the club's 60 years had been donated to charities or those in need. "It would have to be over $1 million (raised in that time)," he said.

The Lions club raised the money for the plaques, while Ballina Shire Council built the wall.

Names on the wall are: Don Cook, Don Easton, Bert Barlow, Howard Mitchell, Mervyn Lloyd Graham, Albert William Bryant, Raymond Lindsay O'Neil, William James Hertel, Hector Douglas Sharpe, Nea Rhodes, Edward Armstrong, Frank Anderson, Keith Barlow. Ken Silva's name will soon be added.
