Relay for Life raises $76k in cancer fight

THERE were some big efforts made at last weekend's Relay for Life in Ballina.

And not least was cancer survivor Nathan Hodges' effort in walking a few laps.

The 16-year-old Southern Cross School K-12 student was diagnosed with an intercranial germ cell tumour in 2010, and spent time in Brisbane receiving treatment.

Now he is in remission and on medications but he isn't able to take part in sport like he once did because he tires easily.

But with a glass-half-full attitude, he was happy to walk as many laps as he could at Kingsford Smith Park as captain of his school's Relay for Life team.

He also was given the honour of opening the relay, which attracted 950 participants and raised $76,764 for the Cancer Council.

While many local businesses and community groups took part in the relay, the Curvettes from Curves gym fielded four teams totalling more than 50 walkers.

Curvettes cancer survivor Suzie Blekemore walked 45km and raised more than $3000, while Curves manager Maxene Grissell walked 70km. The Curvettes raised $8500.
